Massive Operation Underway to Save 40 Trapped Individuals in Uttarakhand Tunnel, Supplying Food and Oxygen

A large-scale operation is underway to rescue 40 workers who have been trapped since yesterday morning in a tunnel in Uttarakhand, India. The incident occurred when a section of the under-construction tunnel on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district collapsed at approximately 5 am.

The rescue efforts involve multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), and the police. According to Prashant Kumar, Circle Officer, Uttarkashi, all 40 workers are confirmed to be safe, and continuous communication is maintained with them. Oxygen is being supplied through a pipe, and essential provisions, including water and food, have been sent to the trapped individuals.

The rescue teams have made significant progress by removing 20 meters of debris to create an escape passage, but approximately 35 meters still need to be cleared. Heavy machinery, including excavators, is being utilized to expedite the debris removal process.

The tunnel, a part of the Char Dham Road Project connecting Silkyara to Dandalgaon in Uttarkashi, aims to reduce the travel distance from Uttarkashi to Yamunotri Dham by 26 kilometers. Disturbing images and videos depict the tunnel blocked by substantial piles of concrete, with twisted metal bars hanging down from the damaged roof.

The trapped workers come from various states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the site today to assess the ongoing rescue operation. He expressed hope for a swift and safe rescue, acknowledging the efforts of NDRF and SDRF. “We pray to God for the safe return of everybody. We hope they will be rescued soon,” Mr. Dhami stated, emphasizing the urgency and concern surrounding the situation.
