Netflix Plans to Discontinue 'Downloads' Feature on Windows; Shifts to Progressive Web App

Netflix is preparing to phase out its app for Windows 11 and Windows 10, potentially replacing it with a progressive web app. While the forthcoming Windows app promises enhanced video streaming quality and access to live events, the streaming service is poised to eliminate support for offline viewing.

The current iteration of the Netflix app for Windows 10 and Windows 11 allows users to download their preferred content in up to 1080p (FullHD). However, a recent support document on the website indicates that “downloads will no longer be supported, but users can continue to watch TV shows and movies offline on a supported mobile device.” This adjustment means that downloads will soon be exclusive to mobile phones and tablets.

The updated Netflix app for Windows will also introduce support for the ‘ad-supported’ tier, offering content at a reduced price compared to standard plans. This tier includes commercial breaks in most TV shows and movies, although certain titles may be unavailable due to licensing constraints.

Currently, the Netflix Windows app does not accommodate the ad-supported plan and displays a message stating, “Your plan does not support streaming on this device.” Since the ad-supported tier is not accessible in India, users in the region will soon need to rely on mobile devices for offline viewing.

While the availability of the new app and its release date remain uncertain, Netflix assures users that those who have enabled automatic updates for the Microsoft Store will automatically receive the new version upon its release.
